Sri Lanka To Commission Galle BESS Today (20)
- A state-of-the-art 10 megawatt (MW) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) will be officially commissioned in Galle today. The installation forms a key component of a national initiative to expand renewable energy integration, stabilize the grid, and store surplus solar power generated during peak production hours. According to Dr. Pradeep Perera, Chairman of the National System Operator (Pvt) Ltd, the initiative encompasses 16 separate 10 MW battery storage facilities established across strategic locations island-wide, representing a cumulative storage capacity of 160 MW. He said that all 160 megawatts across these 16 facilities will be fully connected and integrated into the national grid by next month. Just two days prior, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake presided over the inauguration of Sri Lanka's first 10 MW battery energy storage facility in Anuradhapura, paving the way for today's launching in Galle and the remaining projects set to go online in the coming weeks.
