PUCSL Rejects CEB Request for 11.57% Tariff Hike
The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka has decided not to revise electricity tariffs for the first quarter of 2026.The Ceylon Electricity Board had requested an 11.57% increase in electricity tariffs for the same period.The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka stated that the decision to maintain current tariffs was made after considering several factors, including:-Failure to submit a formal proposal within the stipulated timeframe-Errors identified in the initial proposal-Potential negative impact on the economy from implementing a tariff revision for a short quarterPUCSL had instructed the CEB to submit the proposal by November 14, 2025, but the Board submitted it only on December 29, 2025. The Commission also highlighted that the proposal contained errors and requested a corrected version by January 6, 2026, which has not yet been received.
