Festive Period Sees Increase in Online Scams
Sri Lanka Police have warned of an increasing trend in online financial fraud, data theft and related cybercrimes during the festive season, as criminals exploit heightened online activity among the public.According to police, various groups are carrying out fraudulent activities by targeting individuals based on common festive‐related needs, including online purchases, digital payments and other financial transactions.These scams are designed to deceive users into sharing sensitive personal or financial information.Police said fraudsters commonly use misleading advertisements, suspicious links, festive‐season offers and giveaways, as well as fake commercial and service websites to carry out such crimes. These methods are often crafted to appear genuine, particularly during periods when consumers are actively searching for discounts and promotions.Police have therefore urged the public to remain alert and exercise caution when conducting transactions over the internet. Citizens are advised to verify the authenticity of websites and offers, avoid clicking on unknown or suspicious links, and carry out online financial activities with awareness and understanding to avoid falling victim to fraud.
