Money Laundering Case Against Yoshitha in June
The Colombo High Court today ordered that the case filed against Yoshitha Rajapaksa, son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, and his grandmother Daisy Forrest under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act be taken up again on June 10.The case was called before Colombo High Court Judge Rashmi Singappuli.During proceedings, the Deputy Solicitor General informed court that a related case connected to this matter is currently being heard before Colombo High Court No. 8. He stated that a date has been fixed in that case for the filing of amended indictments.The Deputy Solicitor General further told court that, after considering the progress and circumstances of the related case, amended indictments should also be filed against the accused in the present case.After considering the submissions, the High Court Judge ordered that the case be fixed for June 10 to determine the next steps and to facilitate the filing of amended indictments.The case has been filed alleging that the accused committed offences under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act by depositing more than Rs. 59 million, which could not be satisfactorily explained as to how it was earned, into fixed deposit accounts held across three private bank accounts.The alleged transactions are said to have taken place between March 31, 2009, and December 12, 2013.The lawsuit has been instituted by the Attorney General and includes three charges filed against the accused.
