SL Take Multiple Measures for Stranded Migrants
- The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) says a series of measures is now in place to support migrant workers and tourists currently in the country.According to the Authority, the programme has been activated due to the ongoing conflict situation in the Middle East and the resulting airspace closures affecting travel. SLTDA said the measures specifically aim to assist tourists from Iran, Iraq and other Middle Eastern countries who are currently in Sri Lanka and experiencing travel disruptions.As part of the relief steps, the Government has granted approval to extend the visas of stranded tourists by 14 days free of charge, following widespread flight cancellations.SLTDA said all registered tourism service providers have been instructed to prioritise the management and support of these affected visitors. Relevant institutions have also been directed to closely monitor flight changes, offer flexible accommodation options, and adjust itineraries to align with revised flight schedules.In response to the evolving situation, 24‐hour emergency hotlines have been activated.The 1912 tourism emergency hotline is now operating through the Tourist Information Centre at Bandaranaike International Airport.For flight updates and airport facilities, passengers may call 1994.For flight rebooking assistance, the domestic hotline 1979 and the international line +94 11 777 1979 remain operational.SLTDA added that a special programme is underway to identify tourists scheduled to depart in the coming days to ensure they receive the necessary support.The Authority further stated that it is working closely with the Tourism Police across all major tourism zones to ensure the safety of visitors.
