How the National QR Payment System Works

The National QR Payment Adoption Programme, aimed at steering Sri Lanka towards a cash‐lite economy by reducing the use of coins and currency notes, was officially launched under the patronage of the President. The initiative seeks to encourage the wider use of QR‐based digital payments across the country, providing a simple and convenient method for citizens to carry out financial transactions using their mobile phones. How To Engage In Transactions Using LankaQR?1. To make a payment using a QR code, users are required to have an active internet connection on their mobile device.2. They must then open their bank application or digital wallet app on the phone and select the option labelled "Scan QR", "QR Payment" or, in many applications, tap the camera icon or the option marked "Scan & Pay".3. Users should then scan the government‐issued QR code displayed on the bill or at the payment counter.4. After scanning, the amount payable must be confirmed. In some cases, if the QR code is printed on the bill, the payment amount may be automatically filled. If not, the user will need to enter the amount manually.5. Once the details are entered, users are advised to carefully recheck the information before confirming the payment.6. After completing the transaction, the digital receipt generated should be saved for future reference. The launch of the National QR Payment Adoption Programme marks a significant step in the government's efforts to modernise the payment system and promote safe, convenient and efficient digital transactions across Sri Lanka.
