Common questions about gold prices

What is the gold price today in Sri Lanka?

Today 22K gold is LKR 344,000 per pound (8 grams), which is LKR 43,000 per gram. 24K gold is LKR 374,000 per pound, or LKR 46,750 per gram. These are the prices Sri Lankan jewellers published on September 16, 2026.

What is the difference between 22K and 24K gold?

24K is almost pure gold, about 99.9%, and it is soft, so it is sold mostly as bars and coins. 22K is about 92% gold mixed with a little copper or silver to make it hard enough to wear. Nearly all jewellery sold in Sri Lanka is 22K.

How many grams are in a pound of gold?

A pound is 8 grams. It is the unit Sri Lankan jewellers quote gold in, so when a shop says a chain costs one pound they mean 8 grams of gold. You may also hear it called a sovereign.

Do these prices include the making charge?

No. These are the metal prices jewellers advertise. When you buy an actual item the shop adds a making charge for the workmanship, which varies by design and can be a significant part of the final bill. Always ask for the making charge separately.

Why is gold more expensive in Sri Lanka than the world price?

The world price is for pure metal traded in bulk. A shop price adds import duty and taxes, the jeweller's making charge for turning metal into an item, and their profit. That is why a pound in a Colombo shop costs more than the same weight at the international rate.

How often are these prices updated?

We check the jeweller's published rates every hour during shop hours, seven days a week. Jewellers usually change their price once or twice a day, and sometimes not at all if the market is quiet.

These are the prices jewellers advertise. The amount you actually pay in a shop also depends on the making charge for the item, and can differ from these figures. Always confirm with the shop before you buy.
