What LakFeed is

LakFeed is run from Sri Lanka at lakfeed.com. We collect news headlines from publishers, exchange rates from banks and gold prices from jewellers, and show them together in English, Sinhala and Tamil.

This page says what we do with data about you. It is short, because we hold very little.

Data we collect

Server logs. Our server records the usual things when you load a page: an IP address, which browser you used, and which page you asked for. We use these to keep the site up and to spot abuse. We do not build a profile from them.

Visit counts. We use Google Analytics to count what is read: how many people opened a page, roughly which country they were in, which kind of device, and which site sent them. It answers "is anyone reading the Tamil pages" and nothing narrower. We cannot look you up in it, and it is not joined to anything else we hold.

Nothing else, unless you write to us. LakFeed has no accounts, no sign-up and no newsletter. There is no form on this site that sends us your name or your email address. If you email us then we have your message and your address, because that is how email works.

Why we collect it

To keep the site running, to know which pages are worth the work of keeping, and to answer you when you write. That is the whole list.

We do not use anything we hold for advertising, we do not sell it, and we do not combine it with data bought from anyone else.

Your settings

Your language, theme, text size and contrast setting are stored in your own browser, in local storage. Clearing your browser data resets them.

These settings never tell us anything about you. The site is built so that every reader is served the same page, and your settings are applied in your browser after it arrives.

Cookies

LakFeed sets four cookies. All four are first-party, meaning they are set by lakfeed.com and sent to nobody else, and all four hold a setting rather than an identifier:

• NEXT_LOCALE, which remembers whether you read in English, Sinhala or Tamil
• theme, which remembers light or dark
• textSize, which remembers your text size
• contrast, which remembers standard or high contrast

Google Analytics sets two more: _ga and _ga_FS4GD7GZYN. They are also set by lakfeed.com rather than by another site, and they hold a random number that lets one person visiting twice be counted once rather than twice. They are the only cookies here whose contents reach anybody but us.

There is no advertising cookie, nothing on this page belongs to an ad network, and nothing here follows you to another site. If you would rather not be counted at all, any content blocker stops the Analytics script, and Google publishes a browser add-on that does the same.

Who we share with

Our hosting provider necessarily handles requests on our behalf. Google receives the page views described above, as our analytics provider. Beyond those two, nobody.

We have no advertising network, no advertising pixels and nothing that follows you off this site, and we do not sell or trade what we hold. If a Sri Lankan court orders us to hand something over we will comply, and we will say so on this page if it happens in a way we are permitted to describe.

When you leave LakFeed

Every headline on LakFeed links out to the newsroom that wrote it. The moment you tap one you are on their site, under their rules, and what they collect is between you and them.

This is worth knowing rather than boilerplate, because many news sites carry exactly the advertising and analytics code that LakFeed does not.

Security

Everything travels over HTTPS. Access to the server is limited to the people who run it.

We are a small team and we are not going to claim we have a security department. So we keep the amount of personal data we hold as close to zero as we can, because for a team this size that is the strongest control actually available to us.

Your rights

Write to [email protected] and you can ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. We aim to reply within 30 days.

Realistically, unless you have emailed us before, the answer is that we hold nothing tied to your name.

Children

LakFeed is a news and financial site and is not aimed at children. We do not knowingly hold data about anyone under 13. If you think we do, email [email protected] and we will remove it.

Changes to this page

When this page changes we update the date at the top.

If a change affects what we actually do with your data, rather than tidying the wording, we will say what changed instead of quietly replacing the text.
