Nationwide Political May Day Rallies To Begin
Several political parties and trade unions have organized May Day rallies and processions today to mark the International Labour Day.A total of 16 May Day rallies and parades have been organized in Colombo alone.The ruling party, the National People's Power, is holding 21 May Day rallies across 21 cities today.The main rally, led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. in Talawakelle under the theme "People's Power for the People's Government" loosely translated to ජන රජයට ජන බලයක්.Another National People's Power rally will be held this afternoon near the Maharagama Youth Center.The Samagi Jana Balawegaya rally, led by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, will take place at the P.D. Sirisena Grounds in Maligawatte.The Sri Lanka Freedom Party has organized its May Day rally at Campbell Park in Borella.The Frontline Socialist Party is set to hold its rally at Hyde Park in Colombo.Meanwhile, the Communist Party of Sri Lanka will hold its May Day rally at N.M. Perera Mawatha in Borella.The Sarvajana Balaya has organized a May Day meeting at Park Avenue in Borella.A joint May Day rally organized by the Ceylon Bank Employees' Union and the Free Trade Zones General Services Employees' Union will be held at the A.E. Goonesinghe Grounds in Wellawatte.Police say approximately 1,500 officers have been deployed to provide security for the May Day rallies and processions in Colombo.Security has been tightened at key rally locations, while special traffic plans are in place in Colombo and several other cities due to the events.
