Farmers Urged To Conserve Water As El Niño Looms

The Department of Irrigation has urged farmers and all water users to use water sparingly due to the forecast of El Niño conditions.Director of Water Management H.M.P.S.D. Herath said the country's 80 major reservoirs are currently at around 48% of their total storage capacity.Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology has warned that the heat index has reached cautionary levels in the districts of Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Batticaloa, Ampara, Trincomalee, and Monaragala.In a heat advisory issued by the MET Department, public in the affected areas is urged to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautions against the hot weather conditions.
