Israel Attacks Iran's South Pars; Iran Retaliates
The Middle East has entered a dangerous new phase of economic warfare as the world's most critical energy infrastructure becomes the primary battlefield. The conflict now centers on the South Pars/North Dome field, a massive field shared by Iran and Qatar that holds an estimated 51 trillion cubic meters of gas.Yesterday, Israeli forces launched a significant aerial assault on the South Pars gas facilities near Bushehr, Iran. The Iranian Ministry of Petroleum confirmed that the strikes hit refineries and storage tanks, causing severe infrastructure damage and massive fires. This facility provides nearly 70% of Iran's domestic gas, and the attack has already sent global oil prices surging toward $110 a barrel.Initially, Qatar, which shares the field and refers to its portion as the North Dome, issued a stern condemnation of the Israeli attack. The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the strike on Iranian soil as "dangerous and irresponsible," warning it would escalate regional tensions. Other Gulf nations, including Oman, Iraq, and the UAE, joined in this condemnation, fearing a threat to global energy security.However, the diplomatic landscape shifted abruptly hours later when Iran launched retaliatory ballistic missiles targeting Qatar's Ras Laffan Industrial City, the world's premier liquefied natural gas (LNG) hub.QatarEnergy confirmed "significant damage" and extensive fires at the facility.In a response to the direct hit on its sovereign territory, Qatar declared the Iranian embassy's military and security attaches, along with their staff, persona non grata.The Qatari government has ordered all affected Iranian personnel to leave the country within 24 hours, citing "repeated Iranian attacks" as the cause for the expulsion.However, in a post published on Truth Social, U.S. President Donald Trump distanced the United States from the initial Israeli operation. He stated that the "United States knew nothing about this particular attack" on the South Pars field and emphasized that Qatar was also completely unaware and uninvolved.Trump described the strike as Israel "violently lashing out" due to regional frustrations, noting that only a "relatively small section" of the massive field was hit.Trump insisted that he has secured an assurance that Israel will conduct no further strikes on the South Pars field. The President also issued a severe warning to Tehran, stating that if Iran "unwisely" continues to attack Qatar, the U.S. will "massively blow up the entirety of the South Pars Gas Field" using a level of power "Iran has never seen or witnessed before."With both sides of the world's largest gas field now impacted and the UAE reporting debris-related shutdowns at its own gas facilities, energy analysts warn of a "systemic collapse" of the Gulf energy supply chain.
