712 Accident-Prone Locations Identified, says IGP
Inspector General of Police Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasooriya says 712 accident-prone and hazardous locations have been identified across the island. According to the IGP, a nationwide survey was conducted to identify locations where road accidents occur frequently. He said 712 accident-prone locations have been identified across the country, with the relevant data being compiled and provided to the authorities. The IGP said that, so far in 2026, 1,849 fatal road accidents have been recorded, which is eight more than the corresponding period last year. He added that the number of fatalities has also increased by 16 compared to the same period last year. According to the IGP, pedestrians and motorcyclists remain the groups most severely affected by fatal road accidents. He noted that many pedestrian fatalities involve people who are simply walking or standing along the roadside. The IGP further stressed on the growing number of motorcycle-related deaths, iterating that such accidents take place more frequently when riders collide with fixed or other roadside obstacles, rather than with other vehicles.
